Colonials Discover Mountains - WVU, Day 2

This past Sunday, the two-wheeled Colonials took on the WVU Road Race, a challenging 12.2 mile loop featuring 2 climbs, one of which was gravel.

The day started off with Dan and Catherine starting in the combined Men's B/Women's A field.

Catherine and Dan get ready for the rollout.

Both described the course as difficult, though their races went differently. Dan hung on to the pack after the climb splintered the group, finding himself working with a small chase group for most of the race and ultimately finishing 12th.Dan drives the pack on the first lap.

Catherine ended up spending a lot of time in the wind again. She was working with a chase group for some time until several members of the group abandoned the race, leaving her to time trial a large part of the race by herself. For a large part of that time, she could see a group ahead of her, but couldn't quite bridge up. She did, however, note that she rode up with the guys until the road got steep, saying that it was all she could expect on that course.

Both returned to the GW camp with tales of the difficulty of the course.

Next up was the Men's C race, featuring Rich, Andrew, and Nick. The field in the C race was 1/3 Navy riders, but they were not deterred. The race started slowly, but quickly sped up when riders hit the first climb. The field split quickly, with Rich accomplishing his goal of putting himself in the breakaway (from 15th wheel - not a small feat), while Nick ended up in no man's land trying to catch the riders dropped off the break and Andrew rode with the pack. Rich rode with the breakaway while Nick and Andrew rode in the pack, at least for a little while. At the end of the second lap (of 3), Nick suddenly felt his legs cramping and dropped off. Rich, meanwhile, lasted until mile 26, when he similarly cracked and fell off. Andrew, on the other hand, "rode to survive," jumping from wheel to wheel as riders attacked the pack, all the way to the finish line. At the end of the day, Andrew crossed the line 12th, Rich 13th, and Nick 15th.

The final races of the day for GW stemmed from the combined Men's D/Women's C field. Kirk, Prashant, and Mona lined up at the start. Mona may have enjoyed the course the most out of the entire GW squad - referring to the climbs as "a good challenge" rather than cursing their existence. She finished 3rd in her field.

Kirk and Prashant battled through the D field, ultimately finishing 12th and 17th, respectively. Prashant noted afterwards that he needs to figure out how to climb hills. Prashant hangs loose at the finish line.

The team is now bound together by another common thread: everyone is excited for next weekend's ACCC conference races. Hopefully, GW will be at full strength for the outing - and we will even have some cheering fans along the sidelines of Sunday's criterium. See you there.
